Designer Tobi Tobin updated her Hollywood Hills cottage with mirrors, a neutral palette with pops of high-gloss black, and strong wallpaper. The result is a modern design with a lot of shine. Read the interview with the designer.

Kitchen
A crystal chandelier and high-gloss kitchen cabinets painted Farrow & Ball's Pitch Black "remind me of Paris apartments and grand French style," Tobin says.

Kitchen
"I don't like to cook and stare at a wall," Tobin says. So she added a shelf and created a mix of interesting shapes and reflections — but no color: "Neutrals are what hold this vignette together." The vertical lines of Ralph Lauren Home's Newberry Stripe wallpaper make the low ceiling feel higher.

Bamboo Shades
In the breakfast room, Tobin arranged a trio of vintage chairs, all from different periods. She used simple bamboo shades from Target, painted the walls Farrow & Ball's Lamp Room Gray, "and — voilà — a modern farmhouse!" she says.

"I found the console in the entry at auction, stripped off its ugly blue paint, and aged it with white paint and sandpaper." On the walls, Crezana Design's Sisal wallpaper.

Staircase
Mirrors stand in for ancestral portraits in a sly reference to the majestic staircases of 19th-century English country houses. "It makes my small entry a little bit grand," Tobin says.

Upstairs Landing
The upstairs landing's showstopping capiz-shell chandelier from Z Gallerie provides a dose of glamour amid more simple touches, such as black cotton–trimmed seagrass rugs that match the staircase runner.

Master Bedroom
A small bedroom and sleeping porch were combined to create an airy master bedroom. Wallpaper, Ralph Lauren Home's Abbeywood Damask. "The gold-leaf design is so beautiful and dramatic at night," Tobin says. A four-poster bed from Carlyle Design has the feeling of a canopy. Sheets with Tobin's double-T monogram are from her Los Angeles shop.

Bedroom Details
A combination of vintage and Crate & Barrel mirrors creates its own geometry. "This way, the light comes in from all around, not just the windows."

Patio
Tobin completely revamped the backyard. She used brick from an old patio for the new fireplace and created a terrace from sand mixed with granite. A candlelit chandelier can be raised and lowered by a rope pulley rigged to a tree. It casts a soft glow over Restoration Hardware's Gun Barrel Salvaged Wood dining table and all-weather wicker from World Market.
